I met my husband at the AZ State Fair

Some of you that read my blog know this story…but I have had a few inquiries about what exactly happened. So…this is the story of how I met my husband at the AZ State Fair.

The year was 1989. October 28th was the date. We went to the fair at least once, every time it came to town. Most of the time it was for concerts, but sometimes just to walk around.

This particular time we went, my friend Mary came along with me while my mom and Al went to a concert. (The AZ State Fair was a little different back in those days, just sayin’.)

So, Mary and I spent our evening walking around looking at everything, I don’t even recall if we rode any rides…I am sure we must have done something though, especially the big yellow slide! Huh…

We were watching this ride from across the way, pretty sure it was The Zipper. I remember laughing at the thought of going on that because I am not a ride person at all..not in the slightest and it was a crazy ride. And then what do we see next? Two guys and one girl standing in front of the ride, looking like they were debating getting on..

Interesting.

We giggled. And stared. And giggled some more. We started trying to figure out who the girl was with…the taller or shorter guy…and then they all looked at us. Nooo, we weren’t looking at them…right? 😉  I had my eye on the taller guy right from the get go… and next thing I know he looked over and took off his jacket. Ha! Sneaky… He knew what he was doing! We all knew then that he worked out, the muscles don’t lie folks!

We ended up meeting in the middle and chatting. Well, mostly Mary was chatting. We figured out that the girl was with the shorter guy and that was all it took..

Of course the taller guy was Jeffy and the shorter guy was his friend Kevin.  Pretty sure Kevin was with a Jennifer at the time, so that was kind of funny. So, those two were together, Mary had Jeffy occupied with talk so I was just kind of hanging out of the way observing.

We made our way around the fair, stopping at the photo booths. How fun it would be to get our photos taken, right? 😉 We didn’t have that much time left before we had to leave. So, we did all sorts of photos. (This is the only one that I have on my computer, that’s me on the left.)

Mary Jen Jeff at AZ State Fair 1989We did funny pics, serious pics…it was a good time! I had fun even though I thought Mary and Jeffy were hitting it off. We accosted the photo booth attendant asking for scissors, which they weren’t wanting to share, but finally did…and Jeffy had also asked them for a pen. He wrote his number on the back of one of my pics. Oh, ok…whatever. And then he asked for my number. Um, ok, but I really thought he was into Mary…

Apparently, he had other plans..he called me up the next day and we went out on the 30th to a movie and frozen yogurt.

I had some explaining to do to Mary, but that’s all for another day. 😉

What a fun story! I love the photo. It speaks volumes about Jeff that he was willing to wait for an appropriate time to let you know he was interested so he didn’t hurt Mary’s feelings. You are both good, kind people.

Aww, thanks Geri! Yes, he was very thoughtful throughout our relationship. Even wanted me to date other guys a few times so that I would know without a doubt that I wanted to be with him.. He is a special kind of guy, that’s for sure! 🙂
