Blog Every Day in May: Day 22

Figured I would blog earlier this morning instead of waiting until later today.  I have something else to do on here later today anyway…so… 🙂

Blog Every Day in May: Day 22 and the prompt is… Rant about something. Get up on your soapbox and tell us how you really feel. (a pet peeve, a current event, a controversial topic, something your husband or roommate or neighbor or boss does that really ticks you off)

OK, here we go…

Everyone has heard about the whole Abercrombie & Fitch thing…yes?  You know….this guy?

aberandfiFine. Whatever. We all have our feelings about that.

Now what people are doing is getting back at this guy and his brand by giving their A&F clothes to the homeless.

Because that will teach him….right?

Because homeless people are against everything the guy wants to market to? Because homeless people aren’t cool or good-looking people? Because the guy will shudder to think that his wonderful clothes are being worn by these people?

Wow, how nice of them…

So, I get where the idea could have come from. You are giving clothes to the homeless. That’s kind of cool… And you are trying to get out your frustrations on the words this guy is saying…which is understandable.

But to me…giving only these specific clothes to the homeless is just as bad as the words. These people are using the homeless people to make their point.

People are not tools.

And yes…the homeless are people too. You don’t know what they need. You don’t know their story. They may not want these A&F clothes any more than you do.

Quit using them as tools to go along with your own agenda.

I might be in the minority in my thinking, as I have read numerous articles about this topic and read such things, but I am still standing by what I wrote. I didn’t really go into much detail, but only because I have other things I need to be doing right now…but I think y’all get my general idea.

I totally agree! Categorizing and using people as a means to “get back at” someone for their prejudices, is just as wrong as being prejudice yourself.

Thing is, I bet many more designers feel the same and just aren’t stupid enough to say. I compare this to how I feel about actors. The ways actors live, talk, role model, vote, etc are usually totally against my beliefs, but if I banned watching their shows, I’d never watch anything, but Gary Sinise and Kid Rock 🙂 I don’t shop at stores like Abercrombie anyway because I can buy a tshirt for 10 anywhere, I aint spending stupid amounts for a label lol. Rachael has some abercrombie hand me downs and I don’t plan to get rid of them. They clothe her, that’s their purpose.

Yeah, one of my boys has an Abercrombie shirt and I am not going to get rid of it either. 🙂 They are soft and comfy! lol Just like Hollister and Gap and others. BUt you are right, a lot of stores out there are the same way, they just never said it!!

Great point. I personally think it would be better to alter the clothing to fit “bigger” people and show him that bigger doesn’t mean uglier. Plus, his face scares me…lol
