Just the other day I wrote a post that it had been 24 years that I had first met Jeffy and I also wrote about how we ended up meeting. You can read that here if you haven’t already. 🙂
You are probably assuming that we met when I was young. You are correct, I was 15! (now y’all know how old I am, hmm, haha.) We ended up getting married when I was 22. It was a very quick engagement and some people came up with their own reasons why we got married so quickly. None of them were true, we just couldn’t wait to spend our lives together!
We have now been married for over 17 years and are enjoying each other very much. 🙂
So, when I was asked to read and review a book on being married to your best friend, I thought it sounded like something right up my alley! I have been married to my best friend this whole time!
Hal & Melanie Young, who are authors of the popular book ‘Raising Real Men’, wrote their next book called ‘My Beloved and My Friend‘ which seems to me a sort of prequel to their other book. It is all about marriage, about a Biblical marriage. Having been married for 27 years themselves, they have been through a lot of different circumstances in order to bring a personal feel to this book, which I love. Sometimes people write books about a topic without knowing first hand themselves what they are talking about. Crazy, right?
They went through job challenges, pregnancy issues and health issues, to name a few. Those can all be huge on their own, but they talked about how they made it through in detail in chapters such as ‘In Sickness and In Health’, ‘Children and All That’ and ‘Money – Yours, Mine, or Ours?’.
Jeffy and I have had a great marriage so far and we are certainly each others best friends! I love that about us. In reading this book, I realized some things we could do differently, or at least talk about. Everything they write about is backed up by Bible verses so that you can do your own research or read along with what they are talking about.
A favorite is from Ecclesiastes that they listed..
Two are better than one,
Because they have a good reward for their labor.
For if they fall, one will lift up his companion.
But woe to him who is alone when he falls,
For he has no one to help him up.
Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm;
But how can one be warm alone?
Though one may be overpowered by another, two can
And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
We have gone through many things throughout our relationship and I am glad that we had each other during those times.
This book is 250 pages, so while it isn’t long, it has a lot in those pages! Other chapters in the book are:
- Leaving and Cleaving
- How To Be Married To Your Best Friend
- On Submission
- Fidelity and Loyalty Are Not Mutual Funds
- The Physical Aspect
- The Division of Labor
- The Spiritual Aspect
- Being of One Mind
- How to Fight So You Both Win
My Beloved and My Friend is not going to be available until Valentine’s Day, but you can pre-order it now for only $12 and have it in time for Christmas!
