I’m Happy for You {Review and Giveaway}

You know how it is…you are scrolling Facebook and Instagram and getting caught up with your friends…and hey, maybe even your friends’ friends, depending on your settings…and you see that they are going on their 5th vacation of the year, just bought something that you’ve had your eye on for a while..something to that effect. It gets overwhelming! And you want to be happy for them, because they are your friends! But then you think that you haven’t even taken one vacation in the last five years, haven’t bought anything for yourself in ages… Right?

So, when I was asked to review this book I jumped on it… I’m Happy for You {Sort Of…Not Really} by Kay Wills Wyma.

I'm Happy for You book coverOur cultural obsession with comparison is undercutting relationships and sapping contentment. With disarming candor and humor, Kay Wills Wyma explores how to trade comparison for compassion and rediscover what life is all about.

It’s easy to get caught in the comparison games we play with our appearances, our kids, and our homes. Kay reminds exhausted families about tried and true remedies from the pressures of competitive living.

In her warm, relatable style, Kay confronts the comparison epidemic raging in our homes, our neighborhoods, and our social-media feeds, offering remedies along the way.

With candor and humor, I’m Happy For You (Sort Of…Not Really) explores the troubling effects of living in an excessively competitive culture—and reveals simple yet effective ways to escape the comparison trap.

PinterestingAs I was reading through the book, one thing kept hitting me over and over. These are ‘Glimpses’. One section in the book says: “And remember-I have to remember-everyone else’s seemingly gold-paved road is a Glimpse.” It is so very true! I mean, I am pretty much an open book on social media.. Do I ever post a very unflattering pic of me? Um, usually not…but sometimes I will. I will also show pictures of my messes in life, some crummy things.. I know there are people that like their social media to be more happy and upbeat. Nothing wrong with that. It is their Glimpse…and you have to treat it as such when you view it. 🙂

Kay Wills Wyma is a blogger, mother of five, and the author of Cleaning House through which she has appeared on The TODAY Show, CNN, Glenn Beck, The New York Times, Focus on the Family, and more. Before becoming a stay-at-home mom, she held positions at the White House, the Staubach Company, and Bank of America. Kay lives in the Dallas area with her husband, Jon, and their family.

Fat ThoughtsI found her writing very easy to read which is nice. Some of these kinds books tend to get a little dry and frustrating. The little stories go along with the chapters nicely and read like you are chatting with your friend.

She has a blog that is updated pretty often and during the holidays she is doing a blog series called Hydrate for the Holidays. She lists certain areas that help you to learn how to recapture contentment and joy! ‘For the sake of the season, let’s take a vacation from words like could, would, should, enough, measuring up, and such. Forget about the stresses. Instead let’s look beyond the Turkey and Christmas décor and lean into the words that describe their purpose: Thankfulness, Peace on Earth and Goodwill toward Men. Maybe the real holiday comes when we focus less on getting, more on giving, Less on doing, more on being. Less on self, more on others.’

    It’s so important to refrain from falling into the comparison trap! On a daily basis, we are almost encouraged to be jealous of one another, in an effort to market the next big thing to the public. Such a sad reality that many people do not see clearly. I would love to read this book!
